The room needed something. You knew it the moment you walked in — that feeling of a wall waiting for permission to exist. You just didn't know what it needed until now.
It needed this.
The face is Quartersawn White Oak — the same timber they used to hull warships, barrel bourbon, and build the great hall floors of houses that are still standing three hundred years later. When the sawyer cuts it at just the right angle, perpendicular to the growth rings, something remarkable happens: the tree's internal structure surfaces. Medullary rays — long ribbon-like cells that the oak spent decades growing — appear across the face as silvery, shimmering flecks that move when you do. They are not decorative. They are structural. The tree built them to move water and nutrients from bark to core. The quartersawn blade simply introduced them to the light.
Four solid brass markers — at twelve, three, six, and nine. No more, no less. The brushed aluminum hands are cool and spare against the warm oak, the kind of deliberate contrast that takes longer to decide than it appears to have taken. At 12 inches, this is not a clock that shouts. It simply stands there, entirely sure of itself, and lets you come to it.
