Walnut Padauk Clock

$275.00

Some things are born looking exactly right. This is one of them.

You didn't know you needed burnt orange and dark walnut on your wall until right now. But here you are.

The face of this clock is American Black Walnut — that deep, chocolate-brown hardwood that has anchored the finest American furniture since colonial times, the wood that gunsmiths chose for rifle stocks and cabinet makers chose for everything else. Here it runs in clean, horizontal strips, its grain moving quietly across the face the way good background music moves through a room. You hear it without quite listening.

Then the Padauk arrives. Two bold bands of it, blazing across the walnut face in that color that can only be described as fire — a vermillion-orange so vivid and unapologetic that West African craftsmen have prized it for centuries. Right now, today, it is that color. Understand that it won't stay that way forever — Padauk is a living material, and over the years those bands will slowly deepen from flame-orange into a rich copper-amber, then a warm reddish-brown not unlike Brazilian Rosewood. Some people fight this process. The wiser position is to simply appreciate it at every stage. You are buying a clock that will look different — and arguably better — in ten years than it does today.

The combination is, whether you recognize the reference or not, quintessentially mid-century modern: dark walnut, warm orange, clean horizontal lines, no ornamentation for its own sake. The solid brass hour markers — twelve of them, inlaid, catching the light — are the only embellishment. The hands match. Everything is in accord.

At 12 inches, this is the most versatile size in the collection. It fits a kitchen, an office, a bedroom wall, a narrow hallway where a larger clock wouldn't survive. Compact doesn't mean quiet. Not this one.
