Walnut Live Edge Clock

$265.00

The edge is the whole point.

Someone, at some point, decided that lumber should have straight sides. That the irregular, undulating boundary where bark met wood — the record of every branch scar, every gust of wind, every year the tree grew faster on one side than the other — should be removed. Made uniform. Made to behave.

This clock disagrees.

The face is a live-edge Black Walnut slab, and the natural edge of the tree was kept exactly as it came. The gap between the walnut face and the maple ring is not a mistake or a gap to be filled. It is the original shape of the tree, preserved in the finished piece — irregular, honest, and more interesting than anything a straight saw could have produced. The grain across the face tells the rest of the story: dark chocolate sweeping in broad curves, a tight knot sitting just below center where a branch once started and thought better of it, lighter bands of sapwood threading through the lower half. This walnut had a particular life. You can read it.

The encircling ring is Curly Maple — pale, creamy, and shot through with that rare undulating figure that makes the wood appear to ripple when the light moves across it. It is the quietest possible frame for the loudest possible interior: cool where the walnut is warm, composed where the walnut is dramatic, luminous where the walnut absorbs. They do not compete. They complete each other.

At twelve, three, six, and nine, Bubinga inlays mark the hours — that reddish-brown African hardwood, warm and copper-toned, bridging the color distance between the pale maple and the dark walnut in a single stroke. The hands are matte black. Spare. Getting out of the way. This wall belongs to the wood.
