Walnut Hexagon Clock

$275.00

The bees figured this out 30 million years ago. It took the rest of us a little longer.

The hexagon is not a design choice. It is a discovery.

Honeybees have been building in hexagons since long before anything resembling a human being walked the earth — not because they were taught, not because they were told, but because the hexagon is the single most efficient way to fill space with maximum strength and minimum material. Aristotle wrote about it. Darwin wrote about it. Medieval mathematicians saw the hand of God in it. The shape itself is a kind of argument: six equal sides, six equal angles, perfect symmetry, no wasted edge. When nature needed a structure that would hold, it reached for the hexagon every time.

This clock starts there — with that shape — and builds outward.

The face is American Black Walnut, six vertical staves across the hexagonal interior, their grain rolling in dark, rich waves across the chocolate-brown surface. The walnut is contained — framed on all six sides by a perimeter of Padauk, that blazing West African hardwood whose vermillion-orange color arrives in the shop looking less like wood and more like something on fire. The contrast between the two is immediate and unambiguous: deep brown interior, burning orange frame, the whole thing held together by twelve solid brass hour markers inlaid across the walnut face. Warm gold against dark brown. The brass hands complement.

There are walls that collect clocks. Then there are walls that have one clock, and need nothing else. This is the kind of clock that settles the question permanently.
