Walnut Burl Wood Clock
The tree was trying to protect itself. It ended up creating something irreplaceable.
Somewhere along the trunk of a Black Walnut — or perhaps down near the roots, hidden underground — something went wrong. A bacterium moved in. A fungus took hold. An insect found a way through the bark. The tree, as trees do, responded.
It didn't die. It fought back — flooding the injury with growth hormones, piling on cells faster than it could organize them, throwing its grain into a frenzy of swirls and knots and small tight eyes that spiral around one another in every direction at once. The result was a burl: a dense, domed mass of the most chaotic, beautiful wood the tree would ever produce. Scientists call it hyperplasia. Woodworkers call it treasure.
This clock was created from one of those burls. The face is Walnut Burl — rich chocolate brown shot through with lighter caramel tones, the grain coiling and looping in patterns that have no parallel anywhere in nature except in another burl, and even then, never quite like this one. Look closely and you'll find eyes within eyes, swirls within swirls, the record of a tree's distress transformed by time into something that belongs on a wall. It is, genuinely, one of a kind. Not a sales line. A biological fact.
Four solid brass hour markers are inlaid at twelve, three, six, and nine — minimal, deliberate, warm gold against deep brown. The brass hands match. Nothing here competes with the wood because nothing here needs to. At 12 inches, this is a smaller clock, but burl wood has never needed size to command attention. It does that entirely on its own.
