Spalted Maple Clock
It was already becoming something else when they found it.
That's the thing about Spalted Maple that stops people cold. It isn't manufactured. It isn't stained or treated or engineered to look the way it looks. Those dark, wandering lines — inky, irregular, tracing paths across the pale face of the wood like brushstrokes on rice paper — are battle lines.
When a maple tree falls and the fungi move in, they don't cooperate. Different colonies stake their claims, spreading through the wood, consuming the lignin, defending their territory against one another. The dark zone lines you see are exactly that: borders drawn by competing organisms in a slow, silent war fought inside the wood. Most of the time, nobody stops them. The wood goes soft, then punky, then rotten, and disappears into the forest floor. But occasionally — at precisely the right moment, when the patterns are fully drawn but the wood is still sound — someone finds it and brings it inside.
This is one of those pieces. The face is luminous, pale gold, with the Maple's natural grain still running clean and true beneath the drama. The zone lines go where they want. No two boards ever look alike. The one this clock came from looks like a topographic map of somewhere you've never been but immediately want to go.
Against that wild, natural canvas, the Roman numerals hand-threaded in red leather cord land like a deliberate provocation. The red is not subtle. It is not trying to be. It pulls the eye around the face the way a well-placed detail in a great room commands the space — not competing with the wood, but daring you to look away from it. You won't.
The hands are matte black. At 18 inches across, this clock is compact enough to fit almost anywhere and bold enough to make you rethink everything else on that wall.
