Inspired by the herculean task accomplished by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon, the architects who pulled an Art Deco skyline out of steel and stone and named it the Empire State Building. In that same spirit of vertical ambition, this clock stacks time into concentric chevrons: precise bands of leopardwood inlaid by hand into a pale field of sugar maple, like a sunlit façade interrupted by shadowed setbacks.

Each line is cut, fit, and leveled one by one, then chased by slender brass markers at the quarter hours—sawn, shaped, and hand-lacquered to hold their warm gleam for years. The surface is sealed with a whey-based urethane from a Vermont maker, then hand polished with microcrystalline wax so the face shrugs off dust and fingerprints while the maple’s quiet figure stays front and center.

On the back, a handmade heavy-duty threaded wire—rated to bear four times the clock’s own weight—partners with a U.S.-made high-torque quartz movement, so this 24-inch disc of wood, brass, and light hangs securely and keeps decisive, architectural time.
